Campus guidelines

Campus Swap is a peer-to-peer marketplace exclusively for verified Nelson Mandela University students. These guidelines keep our community safe, fair, and enjoyable for everyone. Violations may result in listing removal, account suspension, or a permanent ban.

1. Who can use Campus Swap

Campus Swap is currently open to students with a verified @mandela.ac.za email address. You must be a currently registered NMU student to create an account or list items. We plan to expand to other South African universities in 2026, stay tuned.

2. Allowed items

Campus Swap is designed for everyday student needs. You can list:

  • โœ“Textbooks, study guides, and course materials
  • โœ“Electronics: laptops, tablets, phones, headphones, chargers, calculators
  • โœ“Clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories
  • โœ“Sports equipment and gym gear
  • โœ“Stationery, art supplies, and drawing tools
  • โœ“Furniture suitable for a student room or flat
  • โœ“Musical instruments in playable condition
  • โœ“Bicycles and non-motorised transport accessories
  • โœ“Appliances suitable for student accommodation (kettles, microwaves, fans)
  • โœ“Tutoring services offered by fellow NMU students

3. Prohibited items

The following may never be listed, regardless of condition or price:

  • โœ—Illegal goods, drugs, or controlled substances of any kind
  • โœ—Weapons, ammunition, tasers, or dangerous goods
  • โœ—Counterfeit, pirated, or stolen goods
  • โœ—Prescription medications or healthcare consumables
  • โœ—Tobacco products, e-cigarettes, or vapes
  • โœ—Alcohol or any age-restricted product
  • โœ—Adult or sexually explicit content
  • โœ—Live animals or animal products
  • โœ—Items you do not own or have authority to sell
  • โœ—Pyramid schemes, investment opportunities, or multi-level marketing
  • โœ—Digital accounts, software licences, or streaming subscriptions
  • โœ—University exam papers, assignments, or academic work for sale

4. Listing standards

Every listing must meet these standards to remain active on the platform:

  • โ€ขAccurate title describing the item honestly (no clickbait)
  • โ€ขReal photos of the actual item, no stock images or AI-generated photos
  • โ€ขHonest condition description: New, Like New, Good, Fair, or Poor
  • โ€ขCorrect category selection
  • โ€ขFair pricing, Campus Swap may remove listings priced to deceive
  • โ€ขNo contact details in the listing description (use the in-app messaging)

5. Community standards

Campus Swap is a community of students who trust each other. Treat every interaction as you would in person:

  • โ€ขRespond to messages within a reasonable time
  • โ€ขHonour your commitments, show up to agreed meetups
  • โ€ขBe honest if you can no longer proceed with a transaction
  • โ€ขLeave honest reviews that help future buyers and sellers
  • โ€ขDo not threaten, harass, or discriminate against other users
  • โ€ขDo not post personal information of other users
  • โ€ขDo not coordinate fake reviews or manipulate the rating system

6. Enforcement

When guidelines are violated, Campus Swap takes the following actions depending on severity:

Warning

First minor violation, listing removed and user notified.

Temporary suspension

Repeated or moderate violations, account suspended for 7โ€“30 days.

Permanent ban

Severe or repeated violations, account permanently removed.

7. Reporting violations

If you see a listing or user that violates these guidelines, please report it. You can report directly from a listing page or contact us at support@campusswap.com. We review all reports within 24 hours.

We take every report seriously. False reports made in bad faith are themselves a violation of these guidelines.
